I actually wonder how much of the uptick in political extremism (between the alt-right and the antifa types) is the internet tough guy ethos and troll culture leaking into the real world. 

People wanting to LARP WW2 (and the U.S civil war) to look badass, while seeming to forget the part where millions died.

There’s some of that but I think it’s more about European politics leaking into the US through the Internet

Democratic socialist politics and antifa specifically is from Europe

Ethno-nationalist politics and Nazi street fighting specifically is from Europe

It’s shocking because it doesn’t belong here and it doesn’t make sense in America where there’s no chance of either movement gaining enough political traction to achieve their goals and just about everybody involved in serious street violence gets arrested and has their life ruined, or gets shot

And I’ve seen a lot of Europeans get bizarrely invested in extremely America-centric issues as well, it’s not just one-sided

It’s worth noting that Richard Spencer almost exclusively gets his ideas from European thinkers like Benoist and Dugin. He more or less shuns Moldbug, the only major contemporary American unorthodox right-wing intellectual around. So I think that theory of europeanization may hold some merit.

This absolutely matches what I’ve observed in Facebook groups irt the far Right. I actually flat out told a friend the other day, “You know that [group] is an Alt-right group, right? The use of the word "Europa” is a tell.“

However, I haven’t seen anywhere close to the same amount of European influence in far Left circles. If anything, they’re getting cues from South America, not Europe, although they of course enjoy accounts of street brawls in Greece.

You have far Right Europeans getting far Right Americans fired up about issues the Americans don’t really have, and vise versa, so they’re both thinking they’re facing ALL of the issues faced by both the EU states AND the United States.

Yeah, that’s definitely not what I said. I’m just really wondering how to defend yourself from piss balloons. My area is full of particularly nasty antifas and it may be useful to know what to do about it if I find myself organizing an IRL political event at some point.

If there really is no way to counter it then they could shut down all public political opposition just by drowning it in enough bodily fluids. I really don’t want that to be how the last vestiges of free expression in America are destroyed.

Sure, the cost of a truck with a water tank will put a dent in the rally’s expenses, but sadoeconomist is an ancap so he surely must understand the idea of the people being responsible for their own sanitation.

There is no right to complain about your biohazardous materials getting washed away.  If water gets on the antifas in the process of washing the piss bottles into the gutters, well it’s far more sanitary than the liquids they were throwing.

Yes, turning all protests into super soaker festivals isn’t the greatest, but it’s better than the alternative, as long as the water pressure isn’t too high.  And it better be, because you’re going to have to hose down your own guys to keep them clean.

No injuries.  I’m specifically talking about just washing people.

Of course, if I were in charge of the city, I’d install high-resolution cameras before the rally, get flying camera drones too, ban face-covering masks for the rally, and then fine every last one of those people $2,500 for malicious biohazardous littering (per piss-bottle) and all the mask-wearers, too.

So with the Antifa ripping down a confederate statue, perhaps Social Justice Capture the Flag is back from a few years ago.

And with that, perhaps they will all switch over to doing property crimes instead of wailing on each other with bats and bike locks and what-have-you, and tensions will de-escalate.

Hopefully.  I mean if that does happen it’s probably worth the price of a few statues.

in the past I kind of dissed Greg Egan for overlooking the possibility of Islamic terrorism, but his (fictional) predictions of resurgent Aryan Nationalist groups in the near future seem increasingly reasonable, even if he didn’t quite get the memetic background entirely right, focusing more on a kind of New Age woo than the clusterfuck of retreads from the 1930s mixed with Pepe memes that we actually ended up with.

Well, when you combine people getting excited about demographic replacement with people who still pretty unapologetically believe in Collective Ethnic Intergenerational Justice, then of course ethnic majority ethnic nationalism is going to rise.

If you got dudes talking like they’re going to take ‘revenge’ for stuff that happened decades or even centuries ago, well, that’s the basis of a lot of “ethnic tension” and ethnic violence.

another prediction was that widespread genetic testing would end up getting picked up by ethnoracial nationalists as an ironclad way of determining group membership, particularly focused on Y chromosome inheritance, thus you’re either a descendant of the historical Father of the People or the interloping usurper descendant of some barbarian rapist; thankfully that idea hasn’t got off the ground yet

Honestly, I don’t know what the reaction to this will be.  It’s probably a better choice than physically beating each other up in mobs, though, and maybe we’ll get a return of Social Justice Capture The Flag and people will calm down.
