Some sides I’m on haven’t fully materialized yet, but they will. My blog description contains more than one metaphorical truth about which sides I’m on, that should be easy enough to guess at.

But on second thought, let’s do a reading of the blog description for anyone who thought it was just flavor text. (Not you, Anon-kun. I know you’re a very smart man of many talents, which is how you can send so many asks to so many people on this website.)

1. In the future, the government may introduce multiple classes of citizenship in order to handle the fallout of immigration issues. Also, if the formation of a North American Union happens, entering the Orange Timeline may have only somewhat delayed it. Progressively larger international unions is the current way forward for both Liberal Capitalists and Leftists.

2. Actually, to bolster Nationalism I would deliberately create a tiered citizenship system if I were ~~Technocratic Dictator of the United States of America~~ Central Director of the North American Union, based on a series of tests and a period of National Service which would be used for survival training and martial education to make the nation even harder to invade and help communicate the idea that citizenship isn’t something free that you just give out.

Also, as you might guess, it indicates where I happen to live.

Opposed to the Chinese Hyper Mind-Union, - Using cybernetic technology to make a hivemind is Bad, okay? I don’t care how equal it supposedly makes you. This is one possible nightmare future for China, which is actually even more of a nightmare for the West than the National Technocratic Black Dragon timeline.

If we took campus Commies and campus SJ seriously and they created a state, it would be a ludicrously oppressive disaster constantly insisting that the outgroup can’t be oppressed, so therefore it’s impossible for us to oppress them.

National Separatist, enemy of the Earth Sphere Federation government and its unificationist allies. - If Open Borders becomes popular, the balance will shift towards a unifying global government, and that government will insist on controlling everything as far out as the Moon. This is almost inevitable with open borders, and will come out of crisis management treaties and a need to control criminals as they cross national borders. It isn’t an accident that power has been centralizing in the EU.

Its enemies may become known as National Separatists, and it will oppose them on the grounds that they are bigoted anti-[dominant economic mode] racist X-ophobic terrorists that are identical to Hitler. To expand its power, the ESF will leverage whatever means it can get away with, particularly economic, to pressure hold-out countries into joining.

However, the median quality of government on Earth is not America or Western Europe, but probably more like Brazil both in competence and in corruption levels. This isn’t an accident, institutions and culture both matter a lot, the causality for them doesn’t run purely from economic development to nice culture and good institutions. The formation of a world government is actually really, really bad. It must be strangled before it ever gets a chance to breath, here in the youth of our timeline, the first half of the 21st century.

As the popularity of Open Borders as a position increases, wanting to keep the nations of Earth separate will gain its own label as a position, whereas currently it is the default.

As open borders as an idea takes off, it will become necessary to create an international police agency to track the criminals across the borders. However, even after the first attempt at a world government is formed, there will be holdouts. The political faction which believes in uniting humanity under one world government will gain a name of its own.
The median government on Earth is not as well run as the United States, much less Switzerland or Singapore. The world government would not only have little accountability as each vote is tiny and insignificant in size, but since control of it would mean control over all of humanity itself, the stakes incentivize every single political faction to enact total war to try to take it over, while those within it would attempt to use its resources to expand their power by conquering territories that aren’t part of the Federation.

How does this relate to the modern day? I was doing semi deep dive into Orion’s Arm after @immanentizingeschatons reminded me of it, and it got me thinking about post-scarcity and politics.

Specifically, I was comparing it to some of the other post-scarcity settings I’ve seen, like Eclipse Phase, Mindjammer, and Nova Praxis. One thing that all of these have in common is that the politics presented in the game seems off.

Nova Praxis and Mindjammer to my mind don’t really have political conflict. They try to describe some of the political units, but they seem to be stereotypes masquerading as politics or and otherwise just poorly described. Eclipse Phase and Orion’s Arm do have political units, but they’re fairly obviously based on the political viewpoints favored in the demographic and seem kind of goofy and impossible because of that.

And it strikes me that to some level this is an impossible problem. If you think there won’t be real politics in the post-scarcity future, I’m going to very much doubt that. But if you think that you can predict the nature of political conflict in the post-scarcity future, I’m also going to very much doubt that. So, either way, you’re stuck with writing a political scene that’s weird.

But really, can there truly be post-scarcity? Maybe with magic violating conservation of matter-energy, but without it, someone is going to want to use the mass of your asteroid to build their habitat to replicate their ideology.

A lot of my thinking on what counts as actually-degenerate now, vs what could count as that in the future, depends significantly on available medical and legal technology.

Keeping birthrates steady is key in a society where lifespan has not been radically extended.
The lack of artificial wombs makes it far more difficult for the state to, if necessary, raise children to make up for population shortfalls.
STDs still exist, some of them are becoming antibiotic-resistant, some of them are permanent.
Most radical body modifications just aren’t feasible right now without dramatically risking the health of the subject.
Difficult-to-impossible for most people to exit their sexuality means that most people are locked in as heteros so gender ratios matter a lot.
Difficult-to-impossible for most people to remain young in appearance, and healthy beyond current healthspans. Long-term irreparable deterioration inevitable.
Cannot adequately repair DNA damage accrued through having children while of too great a genetic similarity.
Heritable diseases largely incurable, cannot be simply edited out.
Can’t repair brain damage beyond some minimum natural level at current tech level, including psychologically-induced trauma.
Can’t repair limbs effectively, replacement prosthetics are of substandard performance.

I’m not against a future of immortal cyborg mermaids polyamorously dating cyborg vampires while engaging in extreme Martian exosports per se, but I am against picking the policies that make sense for that future long before they make sense for our present moment.

You and I both know, Slart, that the Central Provident Fund (and its component healthcare programs) cannot exist in the United States of America because even if it weren’t shot down as evil anti-freedom paternalism, it would be raided for either tax cuts (Republicans) or social programs (Democrats) within ten years of its creation.

Now I know what you’re thinking - Americans are too stupid to use a delegated voting system where the top 100 delegates by delegated vote count form the legislature, much less navigate a ballot of over 500 registered delegate candidate organizations - but I have an answer to this. The first page of the ballot will just have the top five by previous vote count in the last election times percentile standing in the legislative prediction market. They don’t need to know what that means, just click one of the five big buttons.

…Actually nevermind this will somehow get accused of racism within about five days of going into effect.
