And AGAIN, you seem, despite your interest in cultural preservation, willfully determined to ignore the vast cultural differences between the United States and Britain. I’ve lived in both countries and the cultural differences, especially once you leave London, are stark.

Let alone the bizarre idea that poor people are suffering from a lack of charisma.

And as for the charisma, obviously if they can’t make their case well enough on the news media to get the politicians to fix their problem (or rather, get the news media to even cover their case at all), then in that sense, they lack charisma.  That isn’t really their fault.  News media is like that.  But it has to be taken into consideration.

Do tigers have charisma?  Maybe not as we humans understand it.  But they’re called “charismatic megafauna” because animals like tigers are the ones that draw in the donations and political capital to engage in conservation projects that include animals people don’t care as much about.

So you’re reading “poor people aren’t suave enough” when actually it’s more like “people don’t like poor people enough”.

So people are willing to talk about the Ariana Grande concert bombing.  And that bridge vehicle ramming in London.  But increases in other crimes will occur mostly where they aren’t priced out… which means among the poor, who will take the brunt of badly-handled multiculturalism.  And thus the poor suffering the most from it isn’t any sort of disproof that culture had something to do with it.

I didn’t necessarily say “a non-aristocratic monarchy”.

What I was specifically thinking of is, like, people who form entire cultures around considering Working For A Living to be basically illegitimate, and who then don’t have the saving grace to live in austere and ascetic poverty when their rent fails them.

In my ideal nation, the royal family would have the role of safeguarding the nation’s culture (and a few other things) rather than being a tourist attraction or having full political power better reserved for the civilian government.

Their membership would be drawn from national heroes, waning over several generations and requiring new heroes to marry in for the line to remain royal.  So, great artists, great scientists, great warriors, those who have made amazing sacrifices - people who just knowing they’re from your country and embody its ideals, make your heart swell with pride.

This keeps the genetic lines fresh, rewards those who benefit society, helps keep the nation united, and so on.  In many countries the monarchy is reduced to a national mascot and cultural institution - so if we’re going to do that, let’s do it right.

I know some of you are going to read this and think I’m a big evil person, but whatever.

You know, I didn’t care about the immigration issue so much ten years ago.

Having immigrants from India, from China… that was NORMAL.  That was what I grew up with.

But then suddenly

  • Acid attacks are “a normal British tradition”
  • Bombings are “part and parcel of living in a big city”
  • Child sex trafficking at elevated rates is evil bigotry to bring up
  • Cousin marriage rates massively increasing the risk of birth defects because they have gone on for multiple generations is now a problem, even though the native groups rarely engage in it
  • Van attacks and truck attacks where people walking on the street are run over becoming a thing
  • “Honor killings” became a thing here

Now, a lot of people are going to object “but you’re in America, this hasn’t happened (much) in America!”  YET.  There is nothing different enough about America to prevent this if America adopts the same policies, except that we have guns, and so if someone tries to sex traffic our children people might find them and shoot them.

We already had an underground FGM ring busted in Michigan.  They told me that wouldn’t happen.

My standards are not especially high, here.

Now I know some of you want really absurdly high levels of immigration.  

But if you want that, then you have to accept a very different and significantly less liberal framework for criminal justice and citizenship rights.  It is possible to resolve these issues, but you must be willing to pay the ideological price.

yesterday, @freekicks accidentally referred to California as a country and I launched into a spiel about how we’re big enough and have the fifth largest economy in the world (SUCK OUR DICK) and she told me to go fuck myself and that’s how you know I’m a Californian (and she is a New Yorker)

but ALSO we are intensely competitive about how authentically whatever we are so you can’t just say you’re from New York when you really grew up in MINNESOTA and just moved to New York as an adult so I need to tell you that my FAMily is from SoCal and I spent a bunch of my childhood there bc I can’t say I’m Californian just bc I’ve lived here for four years DOESN’T COUNT

but I am Californian bc I’m a snotty asshole and also I say “the 5” when I’m talking about freeways and I eat too many avocados and I know how to pronounce Vallejo and La Jolla

Other Americans may find the distinctions important, but it still absolutely comes across as dumb and self-centred to the rest of us xD

I mean, it’s been over six years since it happened, but I still distinctly remember the first time I heard an American answer that question with “the USA”. It was his first time hanging out with my friendship group, and there were maybe a dozen of us there from as many different countries – and every single one of us was like wait, what??!?

Literally before any more introductions could happen, the entire conversation devolved into the rest of us bitching about how Americans always expect the rest of the world to know and care about the differences between their states and cities. (As if other countries don’t have deeply entrenched local identities and rivalries. And the size argument falls a bit flat when you’ve got people from China, Australia and Brazil in the room.)

In this case it turned out our new American friend had spent quite a few years living in Europe, where he’d picked up on the fact that this is something that the rest of the world finds slightly exasperating.

This is good to know as an American. Like seriously. I had no idea it came across as arrogant. 

But for the record… it is actually important to us. So that’s why we tell you. I’m not from the United States. The state/city I’m from happens to be in the United States. That’s literally how we think about it, because to us saying we’re from the US is totally unhelpful. And because the vast majority of us don’t/can’t get off this contintent very often, we don’t really have practice answering the question, “where are you from?” with “The United States.” Also… I would figure the accent would give it away.

Also, it does control which American stereotype inevitably gets pulled out. The number of times I got asked if I played the banjo because I’m from the American South… I swear. But at least they weren’t saying, “Fuggetabbatit!” or “Surf’s up!”

The Entirety of Europe is 3.931 million square miles in area (About 10 million Square kilometers)

The United States is 3.797 million million square miles in area.

Saying “Im from the USA” is, geographically similar to saying “I am from Europe.”

We are the third largest country in the world. The difference, geographically, between California and New York is about 1000km larger than the difference from France and Russia, and you pass 3 or 4 fucking countries between France and Russia depending on route.

So how is it self centered to give more detailed information? Like if someone said they were from the UK I would ask what part, because a Scotsman and an Englishman are very different, and they fucking border each other.

So fuck off.

Russia is significantly larger than the USA, yet I feel the need to elaborate exactly what part I’m from, neither do I lie that my country is literally more culturally diverse than the entirety of a continent because you cook mildly different burgers. You fuck off.

Irony: Europe is pursuing internal open borders, unified currency, and a federal state, moves that will promote Europe becoming more culturally uniform over geography and less culturally diverse at the continental level, like the United States. People will claim that won’t be the outcome, but we already have a United States for comparison. (Likewise with global open borders and culture.)

Argh, I’m super bored and ornery today.

Hey internet, I just mixed Indian curry with kimchi and put it over Japanese rice. Quick, someone come yell at me about cultural appropriation.

What about Japanese curry! They picked it up from the British, who picked it up from India, so it’s been through multiple layers of cultural reinterpretation.

The Imperial Navy made it a standard dish, just like the Royal Navy, and apparently the maritime defence force still eat curry for Friday meals even today!

But we must go deeper… while the Japanese were occupying Korea, they introduced curry there. Now you can get Korean Japanese British Indian curry, a hybrid dish whose existence depends on the most brutal imperialism of the 19th and 20th centuries!

Coming up next: why the US navy drinks coffee and the British navy drinks rum, a sordid tale of slavery and exploitation. Yay, history!
