Gender, on Tumblr, is a Discourse Attack Surface:

Woman?  “Shut the fuck up, you sexist bitch.”  “Hush, Karen,” and so on.

Man?  Obviously you don’t understand the Lived Experiences of Womyn, you’re an oppressor, you’re coming from a place of privilege, et cetera.

Transwoman?  You can’t be a true woman because you were socialized male, and therefore oppressor, at birth.  (Or various right-wing criticisms.)

Transman?  Why are you trying to become the oppressor gender, you delusional wannabe oppressor?

Nonbinary?  Make up your mind / stop trying to escape your obligations to WOMEN

And so on.

Not providing it makes it more difficult for [discourse rival] to avoid engaging with the content of a post by writing it off as written by [enemy gender].  They still can, but they have to assume the gender to do so, which is a discourse liability.

But on some level, you’re right - it’s probably no accident that all my long-term exes are bisexual women of some kind or another.

In the collection of rhetorician Richard Weaver’s essays entitled In Defense of Tradition, Weaver describes the different forms which propaganda can take and their intended effects. Type 1 Propaganda is the “Big Lie” of the Soviet Union or Orwell’s 1984. The nature of the “Big Lie” is that the lie should be so big and so obvious that no sane person could believe it.

Superficially, this form of propaganda would be similar to the Chinese loyalty test referred to as “Point Deer Make Horse.” The difference is how the lie is used. As a loyalty test, the “Big Lie” is meant to distinguish those who will lie from those who will not lie for the authorities. As a form of propaganda, the loyalties of the targets are already known: they are enemies. Instead, the lie is a form of psychological torture meant to degrade and demean members of the opposition. Consider the following quote from Theodore Dalrymple:

In my study of communist societies, I came to the conclusion that the purpose of communist propaganda was not to persuade or convince, not to inform, but to humiliate; and therefore, the less it corresponded to reality the better. When people are forced to remain silent when they are being told the most obvious lies, or even worse when they are forced to repeat the lies themselves, they lose once and for all their sense of probity. To assent to obvious lies is…in some small way to become evil oneself. One’s standing to resist anything is thus eroded, and even destroyed. A society of emasculated liars is easy to control. I think if you examine political correctness, it has the same effect and is intended to.

Weaver explains that this form of propaganda is aimed at demeaning, humiliating, and eroding the self-respect of those who oppose the regime. It is an expression of pure power, in that the propagandist can force the victim to repeat a doctrine that both people know is untrue. There is no potential gain for the propagandist except insofar his enemy is psychological broken and defeated. There is no intention for the “Big Lie” to have any effect outside the torture chamber.

…this propaganda is aimed at religious and socially conservative or moderate individuals who are politically centrist or center-right. The threat is implicit: either admit that the man in a dress is a woman, or we will take away your job, take away your respectability in the community, send CPS after your children, and otherwise destroy your life… examine the various media pieces about how straight men are bigots because they won’t have sex with transsexual “women:” the implicit threat here is chilling. The message from the Cathedral mouthpieces is that the time is coming when dissenters will be told that they must copulate with a transgender or be punished by the regime. What could be a greater exercise of pure power than forcing your opponents to participate in soul-destroying sexual depravity and to pretend to enjoy it?

This is definitely what some conservatives actually believe.

Their understanding of gender is attributed to “genes,” but it’s actually skin deep.  They either cannot accept that hormones could go wrong at the brain sexing process even though they believe brains are sexed, or they see the phenotype as dominant and morally binding over the neurotype.

Though of course, this is shaped in part by the fact that some people just don’t pass, and barring new medical technology, never will.  Even with those that pass better, there can still be brain systems that are going “THAT IS [SEX]” subconsciously which are in conflict with hetero- (or more rarely, homo-) monosexuality.

Of course, some of the gender people are baffled by this, because they’re at least weakly bi- or pansexual, so what’s a deal-breaker for someone who is Very Straight seems like a fake concern to them, and if it’s a fake concern, then it must exist to further oppression, right?

Leaving aside the whole trans issue, and that suicide baiting at the end is the opposite of charity the commenter claims to have…

I think the issue here is that while institutions like religion supply important guidance by relationship norms like using monogamous marriage as a basis for family formation, the weird supernatural stuff that holds it all together is pretty obviously false, and at other times it really is out of date or punishes harmless groups (e.g., the gays).

Now, we could fall back from the religion to the nation, but nations aren’t particles, they’re waves, so they don’t look real at contrarian depth N = 1. (Whereas I’ve been a sort of double contrarian since high school.)

From that, we could fall back to intuition, but lots of people that claim to be “intuitive” are stupid, manipulative, or trying to justify bullsht. So the Rationalists push that out as well.

And thus people try to fall back to just reason instead, but there are holes in that related, in part, to insufficient information gathering and processing capabilities that brains normally deal with by aggressive summarization and other things, plus still having biases even if you try to remove them.

On the other hand, Rationalists also have less aversion to forbidden shadowspeech, which means some things that are true but forbidden can actually come up in their spaces (as well as things which are false but forbidden).

Honey, if men* got pregnant, the entire evolutionary balance of our species, including reproductive strategies, would be wildly different.  You aren’t just talking about a world where the dialogue on abortion has shifted (and there are plenty of pro-life women), you’re talking about redefining the entirety of human history and social organization.

The forms of organization are themselves dependent on just how the mechanics work!  There is a tacit admission of this in the original, but it doesn’t go anywhere near far enough.  Is it random?  Do men always bear the child?  Sometimes?  For part of the cycle but not the whole?

And it doesn’t end there.  Men would be shaped differently.  Men would be sized differently.  Women have fat deposits on their bodies because making human babies is so ludicrously expensive that preparations need to be made beforehand in pre-modern societies.  Men are in part organized the way they are because they are more expendable biologically.  Higher risk/higher reward.

If men got pregnant, then that goes away.  The changes would be so drastic that they could not be called men anymore.

(*in the classical sense the kind of people that make this comment use, since otherwise they wouldn’t be be making this comment in the first place)
